As writers, we have our own prejudices and personal beliefs. Yet, few seem to ever ask how this might affect how and what we write. Few seem to reflect on the words our characters might say or the types of characters we attempt to create.
The questions I deal with are:
a) What is political correctness?
b) How does race/racism affect our storytelling?
c) Does an editor’s personal prejudices affect hiring practices?
d) How do we conceive of women as characters?
The best way to deal with these issues is through honest dialogue and self-reflection.
